“Work hard, stay positive, be confident, sacrifice, and never quit…”
Check out the interview with Trew Crew exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
SKILLY: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
PA: Prince and I had a mutual friend that introduced us when we both got back into music in 2003. We recorded a song together and the rest was history.
Prince: PA is from the south side of Milwaukee and I’m from the north side. I’m African American and he’s Honduran American. We’re from two different cultures however we have a lot in common so we make it work to succeed.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
We get as many people involved as we can and use every outlet. Our main source is the internet. It’s what connects us to the world in so many ways. What’s more impressive than to impact someone’s life on the other side of the world with your music. Nothing haha!
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Our greatest challenge right now is trying to get Trew Crew Music off the ground and be successful. There’s a lot of sacrifice and time that goes into building your own brand and ultimately you will find out how bad you want it or not.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
We feel like history repeats itself and eventually hip hop will get back to every song having a purpose again. Every style of hip hop is needed for this genre however mainstream rap artists are all doing the same thing right now. We hope it’ll get back to being fun and competitive again amongst artists.
What do you think makes a great song?
Prince: Well these days it’s all about having a hobby in a catchy hook. But I hope it returns back to a process of creating a vibe for the people in their moments of life. Something like it did for us back in the 90’s with classic songs from hip hop and R&B artists.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Work hard, stay positive, be confident, sacrifice, and never quit.
What inspires you to write your next song?
It depends on what mood we’re in what we’re going through, and what we see others going through. Our life experiences is what inspires us to write as long as it’s real.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
PA: Sometimes I’ll write a verse and if I see potential in it, I’ll make a complete song. Most of the time we like to hear the beat make a hook first then write verses. But it all depends on what direction we’re going with the song.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music coming out of Milwaukee now seems more industry ready versus the past, and we love it. What we don’t like about it is the community doesn’t support each other like we should. This is the hardest city to make it out of. You have to work overtime to make it here.
