“First I always find the right melody and the right drums. That is the foundation for me when building a track. I don’t like plain generic music. I try to find the right type of rhythm for my music. These are the steps that I go through when making music.”

Check out the interview with Chris Franklin The Poet exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Chris Franklin The Poet: I’ve been wanting to be in the entertainment industry for a while now, I’d say starting back when I was in college around 2003. My main passions were being a musician and a visual artist. I always knew the creative field was where I wanted to be.

What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I use YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms to promote my music.

What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
The greatest challenge I face is getting my name out to the public as an indie artist or producer. Also getting my music out to a bigger audience.

How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
From what I see being from L.A., the music scene is always good. It’s a very diverse city full of many talented and creative people. So far what I like about the L.A. music scene is that you have lots a good indie artists who offer more of a fresher sound and something more original then what you get from mainstream artists.

Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I’m not sure of what the future of music is going to be, but from what I see in mainstream music, I hope it will get back to good music and artists get back to making quality music. The indie scene is good. Artists can be a part of it by being focused on their craft and marketing themselves well.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Just stay hungry and stay focused. It is a tough business to get in and it takes a dedicated person to achieve success in the music industry which we’re all striving for.

What inspires you to write your next song?
A lot of things inspires me to make music. Many artists from the past who I grew up listening to inspires me to make music and the type of music I make. Great melody and beats are inspiration for me.

What are the steps you take to make a song?
First I always find the right melody and the right drums. That is the foundation for me when building a track. I don’t like plain generic music. I try to find the right type of rhythm for my music. These are the steps that I go through when making music.

What do you think makes a great song?
In my opinion what makes a great song is good melody, great harmony, and a good rhythm. Also good lyrics from the heart.
