“The more you push yourself the faster you will grow as a person. Freestyle with other people, it may help you get out of your shell. Being comfortable with what you’re doing is crucial. Make it a routine to write lyrics every day. The more material you have the better.”
Check out the interview with Tanner G exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Tanner G: I have always been fascinated with music and how it influences me. Throughout this last year my love for music has grown to the extent that I feel like it’s my time to start contributing. I’m still learning the art of poetry or rap, but my goal is to spread a positive message with a relaxing rhythm that pushes those who listen to achieve their own goals.
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
The more you push yourself the faster you will grow as a person. Freestyle with other people, it may help you get out of your shell. Being comfortable with what you’re doing is crucial. Make it a routine to write lyrics every day. The more material you have the better.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
I find it more and more difficult balancing work with my hobbies. I would love to see myself get further involved with the music industry. I’m in the process of converting my hobby into a career.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Using all forms of social media is a great way to reach the majority of the world. Connecting with other people that use different genres of music and sharing the same passion can be a solid way to expand and grow. I personally like to support/use Soundcloud to share my music.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
I have lived in Portland/Mt. hood for the last 8 years and all I can say is I’ve fallen in love. You can hear music from around the world being played somewhere in Oregon. The people love hearing the mainstream along with supporting underground talent coming from locals.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
It’s a goal of mine to release quality produced music. I want to use a collection of lyrics I’ve made over the years to create and drop a mixtape in 2016. In one year from today I hope to have my own studio, affiliate myself with a record label, and continue making my hobby into a career.
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
I listen to a variety of music from rock to jazz. You could catch me playing artists/bands like Bob Marley, Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Earth Wind & Fire to name a few. Recently I’ve started following Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Drake, and Curren$y.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
I love how many subgenres there are nowadays. Music is always changing and I think it’s cool to mix several styles together to create something new and original.
