“It’s up to us to do something about it or not. We are in this new era, we should be more involved if anything.”

Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Shery Salonga:
I started my journey in the entertainment business when I was performing some of my songs that I wrote. I didn’t plan anything but to keep learning and making music. I released my own album and I learned to start my own record label. I felt that this option gave me the path to be diverse in the type of music I want to listen, study, and make.

What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I like to talk to people about my music journey and what I’m doing. They support and encourage me to keep going and what I can do better as an artist and a person.

What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
The challenge that I face in today’s entertainment’s business is having to consistently be on top of the fast technology that is going on in music online. Sometimes it’s fun and sometimes is too fast, but I try my best to keep up with it.

How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music scene in my hometown is going. I think it has more room for more commitment to be honest. I like how it’s open to anything in Los Angeles because it’s the capital of entertainment. I feel that we are consumed with only the trending commercial that limits ourselves as artists to create beyond that.

Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I think the future of music is going to be an interesting one. It’s up to us to do something about it or not. We are in this new era, we should be more involved if anything.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
The advice that I have for upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success is that you have to focus on your path. The most important advice that I am following myself is be true to you even if others don’t agree with it. It’s art and not everyone will like your music, but do it because it’s coming from you and nothing else.

What inspires you to write your next song?
A lot of things inspires me to write my next song. The people, environment, and the life around me. My own personal life and others inspires me to write my next song. The situation that is interesting and catches my attention inspires me to write, it can be a new perspective and a new thing that I learned.

What are the steps you take to make a song?
Some steps I take in making a song is listening to the music instrumental and just start writing. If nothing comes out of me at that moment, I listen to another music instrumental and keep writing. Another step is when I’m just living life and a line or freestyle comes out of me and then I write it down that way.

What do you think makes a great song?
What makes a great song is writing one without a plan. Usually it comes from an ordinary day at the most not unexpected moment where I feel the great beginning of a song starts.
