“The best promotion is excitement. If you are excited, anyone will be able to hear it.”
Check out the interview with Nay exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Nay: Sophomore year I was writing verses as a hobby. It wasn’t until I was a senior that I met one of the best lyricists and the first artist I wanted to share the stage with. I featured on a couple songs with him and have been recording ever since.
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Say what you want, the difference between being heard and not being heard is proper promotion. The rest is you making sure you can always live up to the hype you produce.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Time management is a major challenge, and the bigger one after that would be making sure your art or project is 3-dimensional. If your song isn’t capable of making the audience feel bigger in themselves, it won’t stand out.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
The best promotion is excitement. If you are excited, anyone will be able to hear it. After that, money.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
Currently in Edgewater, MD, but I started rapping in Waldorf. The artists are all east coast rappers with inspiration from everyone from Nas to Frank Sinatra. The fans were whoever you went to school with that cared enough to hear you out or promote a track for you.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
I don’t think about it.
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
I look up to winners, I look up to winning, and under God’s sun. I can’t think of anyone who symbolizes that to me more than former President Obama.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
There is always music to like if you look around. There are many great active artists today, some of which I love and am using to get a better understanding of how big music really is.
