“Success to me is having a positive impact on the people in your life. My family, friends, and fans mean the world to me.”
Check out the interview with KaylaBswaggin exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
KaylaBswaggin: I fell in love with music at a young age. As a kid I was constantly day dreaming about being a big star and spent many hours performing in front of a mirror. My mom was an amazing singer growing up and when I was about 10 she joined the church band as a singer. My mom and I made a deal that if I graduated from college that she would support me in this dream. I just graduated in May of 2016 and then moved to LA the following month.
What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
I believe there are multiple ways to promote yourself and I still have a lot to learn too. I wish there was just one simple way to instantly get famous but unfortunately that is not the case. Social media is huge right now. They say a week on social media is equivalent to a month in real life, so I believe it is important to be consistent presence on social media.
What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
I want to be able to touch the lives of the people that listen to my music. I think it is amazing that celebrities can make someone’s day just by pressing the follow button or pressing the like button. I want the power of being able to speak and get through to hundreds and thousands of people by means of a 3 minute song.
What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
I think for me it seems hard to build a strong fan base that is willing to support me and share my music to their friends and family. I believe once you have about 25k to 100k supporters it is very easy to continue multiplying fans and followers. Once I build that fan base, I think the hardest thing will be staying consistent with new music and new ideas.
What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
I just moved to LA in June of 2016 and I would say this city has one of the biggest impact on the music industry in the world. It is inspiring to be living in a city with people who are making huge strides in the entertainment industry. I hope to make my own unique mark here.
What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
I can relate to other artists trying to make it because I am still trying to make my way up as well. I think the best advice I have received from successful artists is to be consistent. Post new music as much as you can or even just pictures on your social media so you are constantly reminding people that you are out here grinding.
What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
The most exciting thing that has happened to me in my career is my first EP, Next Chapter, going on iTunes. It has been a great feeling to see people buying my music and posting about how much they like it.
What is your inspiration?
My inspiration is looking back at that little kid performing in the mirror every night. I have achieved a lot of my goals in life and even though this is the biggest one yet, I have no doubt that I can make this happen. I also want to be able to support my family who has supported me my whole life in everything I have done.
Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
I think it depends on what successful means to them. I feel that anyone could become instantly famous, but if they don’t have heart and they aren’t striving to accomplish new goals then I don’t feel they are successful. Success to me is having a positive impact on the people in your life. My family, friends, and fans mean the world to me. I am nothing without them.
Where can we find you on social media?
