“It started all with my first hit ‘Monster’ which I wrote about the struggle around anxiety and depression. When I put it out the impact was incredible.”
Check out the interview with Jay-D exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Jay-D: It started all with my first hit “Monster” which I wrote about the struggle around anxiety and depression. When I put it out the impact was incredible.
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Follow your dreams and never give up, you can’t let anything get in the way and hold you back.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
I guess it would be tackling anxiety and depression on a daily basis, these demons are not to be taken light hearted.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Budgeting and wisely investing in a team to promote your music is the way to go.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
It’s not really a hip hop city, you have to go underground for live performances. The fans are cool. The artists, I couldn’t say much about them. My circle is small and I didn’t get in the game to make friends.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
Doing more shows.
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
It would have to be Jay Z, Kanye, Lupe, MGK, J Dilla, Em, and most of all Above Ave; their guidance and mentoring has made my craft what it is today.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
There’s always good music, you just gotta find it.
