“Us as artists strive to get the world to listen to us, so how do I overcome it? I believe in me.”
Check out the interview with Goony O exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Goony O: My team’s done this music stuff for a long time now. A good 7-8 years. I was always in the midsts of projects being made and I was into a lot of poetry growing up. Being around the production of these songs would raise my interest, so I started to actually get my thoughts in words on paper and just took off from there.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
Interacting with my listeners gets some good results. Honestly, I just walk up to them, initiate conversation, and give them my info, and continue my day. Sometimes I hear from them back. Others I don’t. And it’s a cycle that repeats.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
The nonbelief from those who may not wanna see you succeed or just really don’t believe in you to make it can be challenging. People only listen to you when you’re poppin’, or in a sense, have a voice. Us as artists strive to get the world to listen to us, so how do I overcome it? I believe in me.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
There’s a lot of people trying to do music around me, but they don’t really work on their craft. I’m not really worried about those guys. For the guys who do this for real around me, I like it because it does add to the influence to work harder. Just know that I’m coming man.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I never gave too much thought to it. Music is very diverse. I just ride with it. I like a lot of new sounds. What I’m hearing a lot of in the industry are trendsetting bars and music, and the adaptation of music for whatever’s hot to the people. Maybe there’s just a lot of followers out there. We should all strive to be the leaders.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Believe in yourself. Shut out that voice of doubt in our heads and just aim for the kill. If it misses you take another shot. Can’t give up. Having fun is also very crucial because that adds to your patience with this stuff. It may take a while. You did something once, you can do it again even better. Key is don’t give up and believe in yourself.
What inspires you to write your next song?
My family. My Team. My environment. My competition. Self wants and premonitions that I’m meant for greatness. Most importantly is my last song. Each song I write I try to do even better than my last.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
“Pick a beat and flow” -Drake. He said it, but that sums it up for me.
What do you think makes a great song?
Diversity in flow, lyrics, basically some new sounds, being unique. Think outside the box. Have some catchy break downs and a catchy hook, good to great lyrics, and you got yourself a banger.
