“The most challenging thing is trying to stay on top of my game and get the music out so it can be heard and supported over here in America. In Europe it is not so hard because there’s a market for house music over there.”
Check out the interview with Edward Teyamo Patten exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Edward Teyamo Patten: I started in the business when I was 5. I started acting and modeling thanks to the help of my aunt Belverlynn who was a success runway model. My mother got me into acting because she is an accomplished actress herself. And my dad is one of the Pips of Gladys Knight and the Pips. Watching him and my aunt and uncles on stage I knew that’s what I really wanted to do. I had my first solo in the choir at my grade school. I have been entertaining ever since
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I use the internet quite bit. It is hard being and indie artist sometimes because there’s not a lot of money generated. The biggest challenge is getting music played on the regular radio stations. If it were not for the internet radio stations I would never be heard.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
The most challenging thing is trying to stay on top of my game and get the music out so it can be heard and supported over here in America. In Europe it is not so hard because there’s a market for house music over there.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The one thing I like about some of the states is that there’s still a small following of people who still appreciate house music. I have a small following in the US, but most of my sells and my fans come from Europe. Canada shows me a lot of love.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I feel us indie artists we need to help each other out to learn to work together. The direction of music is very unpredictable. We should be more proactive with appearances so people can put a face with a name.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Be aware of wolves in sheep clothing. There are a lot of people claiming they are producers. Do your homework on those people to make sure they’re legit before you sign anything. Always take care of your own money.
What inspires you to write your next song?
I love love and the thought of being in love, even though I’m single.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
I have to have a great beat. Then my sister and I come up with a good lyrics to accompany the beat and it just takes off from there.
What do you think makes a great song?
I need a great beat and some great backing vocals
