“There’s a zone I get into that opens my mind in ways I can’t explain.”
Check out the interview with Dwayne Jr exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Dwayne Jr: I’m from Richmond, VA. But it wasn’t until I moved to Colorado in 2016 that I decided to show myself to the world.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
Mainly my website, social media, and Reverbnation.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Standing out from the crowd. Bringing quality music with a fresh sound.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
Richmond, VA is pretty diverse, but everyone loves hip hop. I love the energy the city brings. I hate that I have yet to perform there.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
Very diverse. I see the future being competitive but accepting. To be a part of this life you must be dedicated and motivated. Anything less just won’t work.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Never give up. Never settle. Never be satisfied. Keep pushing. Always thrive for the best. Have quality. Don’t blend in.
What inspires you to write your next song?
My mood usually. If you don’t feel what you’re writing then why write someone else.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
I usually come up with the concept first after I have the instrumental. I try to lose myself in the music, so to speak. There’s a zone I get into that opens my mind in ways I can’t explain. My vocabulary just flows out.
What do you think makes a great song?
Creativity. Determination. Quality. Double standards. Metaphors. Catchiness. A great beat. And soul.
