“Just to keep grinding and chasing your dream because the sky is the limit. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it or you can’t achieve your goal because you’re not grinding for them, you’re doing it for yourself and loved ones.”
Check out the interview with DSTACS exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
DSTACS: It started a few years ago in Jacksonville, FL with a group called YSK (Young Stunting Kings). We were building a little buzz, but they dipped on me. I hit a crossroad and slowed down. Now I’m running with it full speed. I made up a new group called NLAH Gang which consists of Mikey2Timez, Titan, Rambullet, and Chris Yates.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
Social media mainly, Facebook adds and Soundcloud.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Building a buzz is hard for me because I self-promote. I know I can’t stop and if it’s meant to be then it will happen. I’m here to make a statement and change the lives of my loved ones.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music scene in my hometown is like crabs in a bucket, no one really wants to help the next. One of the main reasons I’m glad I left.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I really feel hip hop is losing its meaning because you got artists that put out a bunch of crap and the fans are letting them do it. Fans only listen to the beat and don’t really pay attention to the words. Hip hop needs more Kendrick Lamars and J. Coles, not this other nonsense.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Just to keep grinding and chasing your dream because the sky is the limit. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it or you can’t achieve your goal because you’re not grinding for them, you’re doing it for yourself and loved ones.
What inspires you to write your next song?
I love music. It’s easy for me to write songs, but what fuels me is that it can change my family life and the life of others around me.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
I just play a beat we’ve made or another person’s instrumental and I go from there.
What do you think makes a great song?
I think it takes passion to make a great song, better yet to make anything great because if you’re passionate about something then you put more feeling in it.
