“I want to become one of the greatest songwriters in music history. Make a lot of money and change lives. I want success, fame, and credit for putting a musical spotlight on Connecticut.”

Check out the interview with Brown Sound Grimes exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
Brown Sound Grimes: I started recording professionally in 2004 and my first professional release Blue September took my city of New Haven, CT by storm. My latest album is called Frankenstein’s Funeral that was released in 2014. I have two mixtapes on datpiff.com, one called BS the Icecold and The Fountain of Youth. I’m in the process of working on my EP called Lyrical Orgasm coming out in early July.

What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
Social media. The music sells itself, the sky isn’t the limit. I feel like there is no ceiling to how far I can go. I’m going to make it, I feel it in my soul. I feel like the chosen one.

What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
I want to become one of the greatest songwriters in music history. Make a lot of money and change lives. I want success, fame, and credit for putting a musical spotlight on Connecticut.

What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
The hardest thing is trying to get my music played on the radio and getting more shows. Shows are not coming fast enough. Exposure through performance is what I am lacking.

What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
The music scene is almost none existent. Most of the time there’s always a small crowd in attendance. There is not a lot of support shown here for a New Haven rapper. I’m working on branching out to peruse better opportunities. I got to keep the movement going no matter what.

What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
Never give up and always invest in you no matter what anyone thinks. This dream won’t die unless you choose to let it. You have to spend money to make it. Trust in you and you will always win. It’s hard but life is hard and it will get easier.

What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
The biggest thing that has ever happened to me in my career is my “Pig Latin” video reaching 90,000 views the correct way, no buying views.

What is your inspiration?
Success is my inspiration. I’m inspired by life because every day shows me something new. Traveling inspires me. I’m inspired by the lust to become great.

Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
Yes of course, but to stay there you will have to be yourself. If you follow anyone’s coat tail your career will end with theirs.
