It’s official. Streaming is now the No. 1 way Americans consume music. According to a new report by Nielsen Music, streaming has passed digital sales as the top way music is consumed presently for the first time ever.
Streams made up roughly 38% of the “music consumption market” in the U.S. with more than 251 billion songs obtained this way. The number is up a whopping 76% from last year.
“The on-demand audio streaming share [of total music consumption] has now surpassed total digital sales (digital albums + digital track equivalents) for the first time in history,” said the study.
