“Our manager sat down with us in the beginning and created what we call rule number 1. The rule is each member of the band comes first. It just means that no matter what we’re disagreeing on, each of us as people, as family, come first.”
Check out the interview with Almost Awake exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Almost Awake: Most of us were kind of born in the business coming from musical families, but our band came together in church. Grady and Gabe are cousins and played on the worship team as kids with Vick. Addison went to high school with Gabe and we found Tommy on Craig’s List like all great bass players!
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Our manager sat down with us in the beginning and created what we call rule number 1. The rule is each member of the band comes first. It just means that no matter what we’re disagreeing on, each of us as people, as family, come first. That we are more important by far than whatever we’re arguing about.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Just getting five people to agree and get along when we spend so much time together is definitely a challenge, which is why rule number 1 is so important. We’ve watched a lot of great bands, some close friends, fall apart right when they were making their best music because they forgot how precious and delicate personal chemistry is.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Nothing beats playing live. You get to talk to fans and when we get to meet with fans it reminds us why we do this. We would rather inspire than impress. We were all literally saved by music in one way or another. We want to meet fans and have an impact personally. With that said, we use every possible avenue especially YouTube.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
Las Vegas is an amazing city. We’re blown away by how many stellar bands there are here all the time. The only real challenge with Vegas is being an under 21 band in a city built for over 21 entertainment. As far as the fans, they’re amazing. Most of our fans are around our age and they have the same struggle.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
We want to be half way through our next album and hopefully touring internationally. We’re touring again in the fall throughout the U.S. but would love to visit some of our fans in other parts of the world. We’re talking to various management and label groups and might partner with someone if they’re heading in the same direction.
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
We all have different influences which is really a driving factor in our sound. Vick was hugely inspired by Hayley Williams, Grady by Joe Satriani, Gabe was Tony Royster, Addison was Kurt Cobain, and Tommy was probably Blink 182. If we all had to just name one main inspiration those would be them.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
Lot of terrible music and a lot of amazing music. It’s probably always been this way since music became a commodity. We’re not big fans of synthesized, computer generated music. It can add nice touches, but we prefer bands that play their instruments. There’s something about learning an instrument that requires a real love of music.
