“I feel anyone can be successful in this world of music today easily. With how the internet is with streams that a wack artist can have a sticky hook drop it and it sells a million copies off of streams.”

SKILLY: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
ADONIS: It all started growing up and learning from Brooklyn. My history in the music scene started out young. I was going to get signed by Bad Boy Entertainment with Puff Daddy. I was only 16. I was so happy my mom was hesitant but was down. And the deal didn’t go through. I was hurt, then I got signed by Universal Music Group in 2006. It was a group deal. We messed that up by getting locked up. A couple of my other labelmates got murdered. It was just a crazy situation. Right now I’m stuck on a contract with Universal and trying to get a solo deal with them. I will do my albums with anyone at this moment. I’m just ready to take some heads off. I will be when its all said and done the greatest of all time.

What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
The best way to promote yourself is to be consistent. We are in the era of the internet all you gotta do is promote and get that following you are set. It’s a lot of guys that made it off just a couple of videos seen and got a mad following.

What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
Ultimately in my career, I want to be if not the G.O.A.T. I wanna be in the conversation of top 5 of all time dead or alive. It’s wide open cause the greatest artist in this genre are older kids getting to teens. And they not knowing who was the greats before them. I want a career similar to the G.O.A.T. Jay-z. Is longevity and catalog makes him the greatest ever and a career span that goes from the 80s to now.

What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
The hardest thing about being signed is if you’re in a deal if the label not backing you, your career is done. It’s a lot of artists that are signed that ain’t getting no music out there. The label just holding them waiting for the artist to get a buzz on they own then they wanna help. I’m getting a little buzz and universal records talk the riding with my scenario. But, if I didn’t get any buzz I would be stuck on universal with no music being backed by them. Getting shot two times while having a record deal is hard. I just got shot and the label backed off. I am a liability to them because they think I’m going to get hurt worse.

What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
In Brooklyn, it’s the land of the spitters. The two greatest of all time is from there. You got big and jay. So being in Brooklyn you gotta bring it. Then going to other places when you say you say you’re from Brooklyn, guys know you have a problem. They know like oh yeah I know he spit and I know he gonna bring them hotlines and punchlines.

What are some of the advice you can give and share with other artists who are still trying to come up?
For other artists, they should be consistent and stay away from others and do that solo thing. Being in groups can kill you cause one head of the team go you call can crumble. And watch who you come up with. I used to come up with Jermaine aka J. Cole when I was in Queens husting. I was living with my aunt out there a summer and my cousin was Jermaine roommate. And I used to catch Jermaine hitting the same studio I used to walk to. The same studio Dave East used to hit up. And me and Jermaine were cool and used to say hey whoever gets on gonna take the other one. I had a deal and was stuck at the time. But still tried to get him on the label with me. He got his roc nation deal and got ghost. I ain’t mad or like dude better help me it’s cool. Do yo thang bro but just know when the music starts coming in duck. I’m coming at yo head too. Cause he knows he ain’t on my level with them bars and wordplay. Still my dude tho.

What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
Best things that happened in my career of doing music is getting signed and touring. When we first got that deal with universal we used to hit venues that weren’t that big but paid ok and was still fun. Like I will do shows from 2 people to 60 thousand it’s nothing to me. Touring is where it’s at. All I wanna do is tour and be in the studio recording, that’s all. Fuck the clubs and the parties if it’s not me performing in those settings in good. I love money too much to be chilling wasting my opportunity.

What is your inspiration?
My inspiration in this game is my love for music I guess you can say. Or knowing that I’m that great to one day be considered the best to ever go it. Then my inspiration is my family and knowing that this rap game can get me money to be able to take care of my whole family. We from the west indies and from where my family history is from we known to ride together. Right or wrong.

Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
I feel anyone can be successful in this world of music today easy. With how the internet is with streams that a wack artist can have a sticky hook drop it and it sells a million copies off of streams. This music dropping now is simple cat bat sat fat rap and if you get that catchy hook you on. It used to be if you don’t have the lyrics you weren’t moving anything at all. So as far as success any artist can get it easy the question is can they hold that magic and keep going.
