“I do a lot of research online because most of the music industry is based online these days.”
Check out the interview with Young Hoag exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Young Hoag: My love for music started in church choir but as a rapper, recess. We’d bring in mixtapes with instrumentals, go around a circle and freestyle.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I use social media a lot to promote, but my niche is to get my street team out there and get hands on and be personable. Grab phones and make them check me out, I know I got a different sound.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Staying relevant; the industry is ever-evolving so you’ve got to keep up with it. I do a lot of research online because most of the music industry is based online these days.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
We’ve got a lot of talent where I’m from. I feel like more artists would make it if we came in and worked together. Personal and business connections are very important.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
Every decade has its own style. This generation is different but the ability to adapt will help. I think instrumental music is on the rise with a lot of repetitive hooks.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Consistency and originality.
What inspires you to write your next song?
A lot of things can inspire me. I could just see something randomly and a hook pops in my head.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
I don’t really know. No specific format, I just get inspired and it flows out.
What do you think makes a great song?
The beat has to be lit. Dope concept.
