“I feel like my greatest challenge is going to be staying true to who I am and to my music … I know I can overcome this by keeping my core together, believe in who I am as an artist, and just keep it Brooklyn.”

Check out the interview with Ya Highne$$ exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Ya Highne$$:
It all started when I was in high school when I met my DJ and my best friend DJ Dozen. He heard me spitting in a cypher and befriended me. Ever since he’s pushed me to be great and succeed in music.

What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
The most effective way to promote music from my experiences is through performances. It gives you me direct contact between me and new listeners.

What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
I feel like my greatest challenge is going to be staying true to who I am and to my music. I feel this way because you hear about different artists all the time drifting off and not staying true to who they and their fans. I know I can overcome this by keeping my core together, believe in who I am as an artist, and just keep it Brooklyn.

How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music scene in NY is picking up. We got a lot of new fresh hot talent emerging. Feels good to hear the hottest tracks coming out of NY again.

Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I think the future of music is going to be great again. I feel like artists and the fans are starting to realize that music is an art form again. We as artist need to respect the culture and make it about music and not focus too much on the politics. We have to take back control.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
My advice to anyone pursuing music is to stay true to yourself and never forget what you believe in. Always remember what you’re doing it for, and most importantly have fun.

What inspires you to write your next song?
Past experiences and what I want out of life. Those two things always get my creativeness going.

What are the steps you take to make a song?
When I get a track from a producer I always listen to it all day in my headphones. Then I go to a quiet room in my crib with my old iPhone and create. Normally it takes me a couple hours to write a three verse track.

What do you think makes a great song?
I’ve always been a fan of real music. I absolutely love when artists express past experiences and relatable situations in their music. To me those are the best songs, the ones with passion and emotion.
