“Give back to your fan base. Give them incentives to support you like prizes, awards, etc.”

Check out the interview with Within Shadows exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
Within Shadows:
I am Sean Farias, the vocalist and creator of Within Shadows. Within Shadows began back in 2012 as a solo project by myself. It was created with the mindset that the project would be metal based, but bring a variety of different genres to the table and not be stuck to one single sound. We are now playing live shows, creating music videos, and working on more music to help grow our name more in the community.

What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
Some of the best ways to promote yourself as an artist is by using social media to your advantage the best you can. Connect with your fan base on a personal level, through messaging, friendships, and more. Post frequently and new content as frequently as possible. Give back to your fan base. Give them incentives to support you like prizes, awards, etc.

What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
Ultimately in our music careers we want to become touring musicians. Full time work in music is what we work hard towards every free second we have. It is a dream that we want to become a reality and would make us the happiest and fulfilled. Anything more than that would be icing on the cake.

What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
The hardest thing about being in the music business is money and also not being noticed for your work. Spending thousands of dollars on equipment, recording, and more is a huge setback financially. Not being noticed by labels and higher up music community people sucks and is hard to deal with.

What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
Our area is the Windsor, Ontario, Canada region. The music scene here is very much alive and a supportive community. It can be extremely tough here sometimes to get your band name out there but it can be like that in bigger cities too. There aren’t very many hardworking musicians in the area that have taken the next big step forward with their project, but there are a few that have that we respect and are very happy for that really worked hard and earned it. There are so many hardworking musicians in the area that deserve more spotlight on them as well and hopefully will if they keep working the way they are cause it’s truly incredible their passion towards music. The venues may seem limited in the city compared to bigger cities, but there are so many great ones that draw in big crowds like The Beer Exchange, Dominion House, Backstage and more. The people in the area and music fans are extremely supportive, which is a huge plus as well for the bands here.

What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
Some advice that I can give to fellow musicians is to never give up on a goal that you are pursuing. If you truly believe in it and it makes you happy, then keep working at it and put all your energy into it. You will get the most out of it and you will go the furthest with that kind of mindset.

What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
Currently the best thing that has ever happened in my music career was creating my first full length album called Mind = Enemy with my band. I was able to express so many feelings from within myself, both instrumentally and lyrically. I was ultimately able to work alongside some amazing musicians as well on the album too.

What is your inspiration?
I have many separate inspirations in music that have helped me to get to where I am now. My main inspiration out of all of them is my father Joe Farias. Ever since I was brought into this world he has supported me in everything I do and provided me with everything I needed to be able to be successful in what I did.

Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
I personally feel that not everyone can be commercially successful in today’s music industry. It is extremely difficult to be now. If you look past that though and do it for personal reasons and reasons for personal success, then you can be extremely successful with music. Always do something because you truly love it.
