“The music scene in NY is hot and is coming out with heat. What I like now is that the legends are dropping heat and the new comers can too.”
Check out the interview with Tyrán Edwards exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Tyrán Edwards: I had a foot in the industry when I was 16 meeting Disco D in 2005. He was hot at the time due to his production being featured on 50 Cent’s Massacre album. He wanted to give me a chance to work with Sara Stokes from Da Band. I made it to Sony and met J. Cole’s A&R at the time. He didn’t like my music.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I create my own mini videos that fit into the Snapchat and Instagram format. Each video has my song or music production. I love using visuals.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Biggest challenge is none, I have no expectations. I provide a service to make people happy with my music. I look to lead on with high vibrant energy.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music scene in NY is hot and is coming out with heat. What I like now is that the legends are dropping heat and the new comers can too. There isn’t anything I don’t like. The doors are wide open now.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
The future of music will be more melodic than ever. This is the most melodic hip hop as ever been. Everyone is singing or the beat has some kind of melody in it. Artist who have their niche will play a big part to push it forward. You can be a part of it by selecting your lane. You must have your own lane, you can’t sound like your favorite artist or song.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Just watch out for scams. Build a company and own your publishing. Create a team of producers. Learn how to place your video spins on your own through companies that assist artists. Pay attention and stay positive. Watch your budgets.
What inspires you to write your next song?
God helps me for real. I try to make something different every time. My songs write themselves out. I have a song about how I met a mother and daughter at a bar and I had no idea who they were. They look like sisters.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
I really don’t have a formula for that. They come in different ways. I might do a hook and come back the next day. I might do the whole track and another the same day.
What do you think makes a great song?
You must have some spark of energy that’s attractive. Sound of voice has to match the melody. A real good hook that goes right with the subject matter. Having highlight spots and lines that people can remember.
