“I feel that in today’s generation there is no knowledge, dedication, or heart being put into the music. The way to be more creative about music is to be more educated and knowledgeable about your craftsmanship and creativity.”

Check out the interview with The Cali King exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
The Cali King:
I was able to start doing things when I was very young in my childhood. I’ve always wanted to be in the music business. My journey started in church because that’s where I started singing first before I started rapping. Later on I began developing my own sound and style in music.

What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I try my best to promote on social media websites. It’s not that easy especially in today’s society where everything is diverse when it comes to the music business. It can be very overwhelming because of the competition and trying to promote on digital marketing.

What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Today’s entertainment is very demanding because you have to work twice as hard versus the ones who didn’t have to in the beginning. I’ve overcome a lot of things in my life, but as far as entertainment business I’m still learning and still working to make it.

How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
Born in raised in Oakland, CA. The music scene is so diverse especially from the golden era. I like some music but not all and that’s because there’s no creativity and no passion. I grow up listening to the greats from the west coast, east coast, dirty south, and etc.

Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
5 to 10 years from now I can’t really say because everything is different. I feel that in today’s generation there is no knowledge, dedication, or heart being put into the music. The way to be more creative about music is to be more educated and knowledgeable about your craftsmanship and creativity.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
The best way to learn the music business and gain success is by going to school and working hard to make it. Create your own path and stick what you know best in order to succeed in life.

What inspires you to write your next song?
I get inspired by my love ones. I study and observe my environment. I love to tell stories in my music and give 100% of my all in my music. I love the golden era when we had real music to listen to such as E-40, Too Short, Ice Cube, Eazy E, 2pac, etc.

What are the steps you take to make a song?
I focus my energy on speaking my mind and sticking to what I know best. I rap and sing from my heart when I make a song. It can be fun and amusing or an emotion from a past experience.

What do you think makes a great song?
Every artist is different in their own unique way when creating music. What catches my attention? Deliver, quality, and a strong clear message. The most important factor would be the verse/hook.
