“Promote, market, and advertise yourself. Create a reasonable budget …”

Check out the interview with Stack Cheese exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
Stack Cheese:
I started out in a group with my older brother called Young Criminal Minds writing choruses and verses for him and others in the group.

What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
Promote, market, and advertise yourself. Create a reasonable budget; you’ll need that when it comes to flyers, posters, cards, etc. Then once the budget is in place you have to promote yourself. Word of mouth will always be a key factor for you to build awareness. Next you have to market yourself where ever your strongest fan base is.

What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
I already have a head start by owning my own independent record company called Chedda Factory Network, LLC. out of East Palo Alto, CA. So I would have to say a successful music mogul.

What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
Building relationships would probably be the most difficult I would say. Here in the Bay Area were independently driven, so what I’ve been able to do is build alliances with my peers I’ve worked with over the years as well as a network with everything in house in terms of recording, mixing, mastering, manufacturing, and distribution of projects.

What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
I’m probably the biggest fan of my city East Palo Alto. With the success of artists like myself and the Rogue Team it’s a pulse in our city right now that’s geared by the music. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had some brutal times due to violence but now we’re all working together muscly and trying to bring that Atlanta type atmosphere here.

What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
Two things I’ve learned in this business. 1) Consistency, you have to be able to stay visible to your fans by releasing mixtapes, singles, videos, etc. 2) Focus, this business requires a lot of time and energy, struggle, and sacrifice that you have to take seriously if you want to be an artist.

What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
I would have to say the R3.5 Tour. I was able to fly to New York and work with DJ Absolute of Hot 97 and Heavy Hitters. Los Angeles and San Francisco for Coast 2 Coast with Lil Fats (CEO of Coast 2 Coast) and just really getting a hands on approach on the industry.

What is your inspiration?
My Children. Knowing how hard it was growing up has a child showed me what my kids are going to need in order to succeed. Chedda Factory Network, LLC. will provide that opportunity for my daughter Cambria and son Jermari.

Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
Of course, with everything going digital and with social media platforms artist can take advantage. Artists now compared to artists in past have the luxury of doing everything themselves.
