“I would tell upcoming musicians to stay independent because the record labels are just looking out for themselves at the end of the day. Do your research on the music business and most importantly know your worth.”
Check out the interview with RichSoFresh exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
RichSoFresh: I went to school for audio engineering and I ended up recording my first two songs there, as well as others. After I graduated I ended up getting in contact with an engineer that my sister knew and I started recording some covers to develop my fan base, then I started working on my first project with my original music. Guess the rest is history.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
Some ways I promote my music is through social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I also upload my music to Reverbnation, Soundcloud, YouTube, etc. I even email my music to stations as well.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
The greatest challenge I face in today’s entertainment business is being careful of who I trust. I overcome that by doing my research on sites to make sure that no one is trying to scam me for my hard earned money.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music scene is very busy in my hometown. I like the fact that there a lot places you can perform at to get exposure. I don’t like having to pay to perform.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I think the future of music is going to be even more digital then it is now. I feel that artists can be a part of it by having their music accessible on as many platforms as possible.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
I would tell upcoming musicians to stay independent because the record labels are just looking out for themselves at the end of the day. Do your research on the music business and most importantly know your worth.
What inspires you to write your next song?
Life itself inspires me; the good, the bad, ups and downs.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
Well first, I try to see what instrumental I’m feeling the most for the topic I want to write about, then try to remake a similar style of beat with my engineer.
After, I attempt to see what sections could be my verses and then hook & bridge part. Then I try to see what lyrics I have for the topic and once I feel like I have more than enough material, I start weeding out my best lyrics for that song and start coming up with my flow and delivery. I usually do about 4 drafts of writing for the song before I decide on my final version.
What do you think makes a great song?
Meaningful lyrics and a catchy hook. Great flow and beat as well!
