“Twitter, and Instagram are all very powerful tools to promote and grow your fan base. If I can give you an advice, it’s stay active and interact with people. Reply, leave comments, and interact with your fans.”

Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
MT Motherlandboy: It started when I was 12 years old in middle school. I was part of a rap group with my friends in Mali, West Africa where we would perform at school talent shows. Then I moved to the USA when I was 18, that’s when I really started getting serious. I saved up, got a home studio, and started recording heavily. In 2013 I started Motherland Music, LLC., my own record label. I started putting out mixtapes, doing shows, and growing a fan base.
What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
The best way to promote myself is first my website and also social media. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all very powerful tools to promote and grow your fan base. If I can give you an advice, it’s stay active and interact with people. Reply, leave comments, and interact with your fans.
What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
I wanna become a major player on the international music scene. Not only in hip hop and in the USA, but internationally influential and recognized for the great music I bring to the world.
What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
You have to be self-driven and have a hustler mentality. You need a do it yourself attitude and constantly be motivated.
What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
I am in Atlanta which is like the mecca of hip hop right now. Most of the new major players are from here and the scene is very vibrant and competitive. I love living here, every single night there is something going on. It’s very easy to network.
What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
Be yourself, be authentic, and make genuine music. A lot of people are copying styles and personalities. It might make you popular quick, but in the long run it won’t last.
What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
Being able to record a full length album independently.
What is your inspiration?
My life, my struggles, my pains, where I am from. I get inspired by a lot.
Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
Yes, if you have the right business ethic. It’s more about the business than the music itself this days.
