“My life is my inspiration. When I go through something, I grab a piece of paper and write! Everything I have went through in my life are in my songs; lessons learned. Unlike secular rap, which frequently glorifies sex, drinking, violence and drugs, my holy Hip Hop focuses on The One who can deliver you from those things…”

SKILLY: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
MsTish!: My singing began as a little girl at age eight in my church in Southern, IL. My preteen life continued in the music industry with many endeavors. That led me to go into the studio in 1994 with my classmate “Bo Jackson” and recorded “Sunny Blue Skies.” I have been recording ever since! After releasing my first single Comprehending Knowledge, I soared to new heights. I exceeded the expected normal potential of regular “gospel artists.”
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I have many creative ways to promote my music. I hold contests, I give away some of my music at concerts, and I drive around Memphis and give away bags to the less fortunate. That gives me opportunity to hand them a CD also. I also utilize Facebook!
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
The greatest challenge I face is being a woman who raps, sings, writes, and produces my tracks! I think that alone makes me strange; in an unique way. Another challenge I face is turning the youth around! My ministry is directed towards the youth. What is needed is a creative approach to the “evangelization” of young people, where they will be encouraged to serve God! A point of re-conversion where a young person grows as a man or woman of God, where he/she will be encouraged to take responsibility and exercise his/her leadership skills.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music scene here in Memphis is at a peak right now. I see alot of artists making it from Memphis. I myself have had alot of good reviews from Memphis. Holy Hip Hop is not accepted everywhere in Memphis and that is the only thing that I don’t like.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I really feel that technology will lead the music industry in the near future. Artists should level up what talents they have so they can meet technology and it’s music!
What inspires you to write your next song?
My life is my inspiration. When I go through something, I grab a piece of paper and write! Everything I have went through in my life are in my songs; lessons learned. Unlike secular rap, which frequently glorifies sex, drinking, violence and drugs, my holy Hip Hop focuses on The One who can deliver you from those things.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
When I write a song, I spend hours listening to tracks because as I write, I can hear the music in my head. It’s like a hunting game to me LOL. I go into the studio and record what I have put together, and all I can do is shake my head, because it’s amazing to see my project come to completion!
What do you think makes a great song?
Emotion is what makes a song great! I went through most of what I talk about on my songs, and when I recorded them it was so powerful!
