“We give the harsh reality of where we’re from. We also give you how we overcome it all. The fans are beautiful because they live it with us so they relate. They also realize their voices are what we need to lead. Strength in numbers, never forget that.”

Check out the interview with Mr Smith aka Bo$$ Money exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Mr Smith aka Bo$$ Money: I starting recording music in 2006 with a DJ friend of mine from Ohio. The more people I let listen to my recordings actually inspired me to take the craft seriously and pursue it. That’s when I began networking with studios, DJs, artists, and club owners to really learn the business. Once I gathered enough advice and information, I constructed a business plan and my team and I are still at it till this day.

What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Stay focused, stay motivated, believe in yourself regardless of what others may think, teach yourself, don’t wait on anyone to do it for you, and most importantly keep God first.

What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
One of my hardest challenges was staying motivated when things are not going your way. I learned you have to survive the storm in order to get to the sun. Staying focused and adjusting will take you far in life period. Never give up or give in. Never have a complacent mindset, that’s the biggest challenge and task.

We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Teaming up with the right artist that’s actually doing shows and parties. Record pools of course because you need the DJs, especially the ones in your area. Submit to magazines and radios for interviews, tell your story. Most importantly, don’t wait on no one to do it for you. You got to work hard.

Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
I grew up in Laurens County, South Carolina and I currently live in Columbia, South Carolina. I have family in the Charleston area of South Carolina as well so I very familiar with my entire state. There’s a lot of racial adversity to overcome in my state but through the grace of God we’re overcoming it every day as time goes by.

Our music reflects our environment. We give the harsh reality of where we’re from. We also give you how we overcome it all. The fans are beautiful because they live it with us so they relate. They also realize their voices are what we need to lead. Strength in numbers, never forget that.

Where do you see yourself a year from today?
Doing what I’m doing now on a much larger scale. Continuing to build my brand bigger.

Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
My biggest inspirations were seeing someone turn nothing into something. Really beating all odds. People like 2pac, Snoop Dogg, Master P, Birdman, Jeezy, and 50 Cent to name a few. Today I look to myself to mark my stamp to beat all odds. That’s what I look up to and look forward to.

How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
Music coming out today is cool. Everybody seems to have different sounds in music today so it keeps you on edge. I have no problem with that.
