“Music is constantly changing and evolving. Some of the hardest tasks and challenges is keeping up with everything and trying to stay ahead of the trends. This is why originality is so important.”

Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Micky Waves: My older brother was in a rap group when I was a kid. They used to rehearse downstairs in my mother’s basement. I remember always listening to them through a vent on the floor. I immediately fell in love with the way they put words over different beats and told different stories. I remember telling myself, “I can do this too.” I immediately started to write my own raps and telling my own stories.
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
The biggest piece of advice I could give is to put out the same energy that you want to receive. Show your support and love to everyone and if it’s genuine, the universe will show that love right back. Never miss an opportunity to earn a fan, but most importantly never miss an opportunity to become one.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Music is constantly changing and evolving. Some of the hardest tasks and challenges is keeping up with everything and trying to stay ahead of the trends. This is why originality is so important. Instead of keeping up with trends, create your own. There are plenty of artists that come and go but only a few that will be original enough to last.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
The best way to promote your music is by continuously engaging with your fans, not only on social media but through shows, meet and greets, and anything that puts you right in front of them. It’s important to me for my fans to feel like I’m real and they know me. The more they buy into you, the more they will buy into your music.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
I love my city. Everything about Chicago made me who I am today. Chicago has been associated with a lot of violence and negativity lately. That’s why it’s important for my music to shed a different light on Chicago. The artists and fans are so supportive and encouraging. I really appreciate the love and will do everything I can to make sure I give it all back.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
A year from today I see myself continuing to put out the best music possible and getting my message to more and more fans. I see myself working even harder to push my dream to new heights and being the best artist I can be. If I stay consistent with putting out quality music and performances, there is no limit to what the next year could hold for me.
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
My biggest inspirations have always been Michael Jackson, Prince, Anita Baker, and Kanye West. These artists have always been so fearless and unafraid to be themselves. When you hear their music it moves you, you feel something. I am also really inspired by the artists in my generation as well.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
The music that comes out today is extremely fresh and entertaining. However, one of the biggest things that I think it is lacking is substance and that’s what I think people are starting to want more of. It is definitely something that you can just have fun and dance to.
