“The best thing that’s happened in my career was when I decided to go Independent. I call all the shots and if we fail there’s no one to blame but us.”
Check out the interview with Lagato Shine exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
Lagato Shine: I was signed in a group called I.G.T. (Ill Gotten Team) to the infamous Loud Records in 1998-2001. Unfortunately with the demise of Loud Records things didn’t pan out the way we hoped they would have. Fast Forward to 2009. I started my own label named Last Run Entertainment. I was XXL Freshman of the week in 2013 and have worked with a handful of great artists. Needless to say we try to keep busy and steadily progress.
What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
I find meeting and greeting DJs, promoters, even fans has been very effective way for me to build a more intimate relationship. I think half is talent based and half is hustle based. Knowing the right people can help you cut a lot of corners. Ultimately staying relevant and visual keeps your name afloat!
What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
I ultimately want to become a household name as an artist and continue to develop my label and the artists on my label. And continue to innovate and look for business ventures to further my success.
What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
For me the hardest thing about being in the music business has been finding good help. I wear a few different hats in my camp which at times affects a particular area in our campaign. It could pose some difficulty mixing a record, promoting another record, and rehearsing for a show all in the same day.
What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
Roosevelt, Long Island in NY is a rough urban town where we scratch and pull to make ends meet, but it’s love amongst the neighbors. The music scene is crowded, social media and home studios have allowed anyone to explore their musical cravings. Regardless of what are you’re from good music and good artists will always stand out from the crowd.
What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
My best advice would be keep it 1000% with yourself with your talent level. If you feel that you can compete and establish yourself as a bona fide artist go hard at all times. Constantly create and promote. Get out from behind the computer and go mix it up in person and establish your connections and relationships.
What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
The best thing that’s happened in my career was when I decided to go Independent. I call all the shots and if we fail there’s no one to blame but us.
What is your inspiration?
My inspiration at this point is the love of the music and getting paid to do what we do. I also love the reaction of fans when you release a new song or project. Priceless!
Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
I feel anyone has a shot to be successful now in today’s world of music because it’s been seen that we don’t know what will go viral. Furthermore no one can predict or explain how a song goes viral.
Where can we find you on social media?
