“When I felt I had done everything I could there I moved to Arizona and did my first stand up at Stand Up Live in downtown Phoenix. That’s when I came up with comedic hip hop. I use my jokes to lead into my songs during my performance.”

Check out the interview with KT Gipson exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
KT Gipsom: When I was 11 I lived in Wetumpka, Alabama. I had this mean teacher that would pinch, spank, yell at us, and tell all her business all day. I vowed to get back at her and I wrote a diss poem about her. I performed it I front of my whole class. I got kicked out of school and my grandma kicked my ass. When she told my dad he said that boy is going to be famous on day. That’s where it all started.

Since then I’ve lived in Detroit where I performed all over the city and battled everybody I could. When I felt I had done everything I could there I moved to Arizona and did my first stand up at Stand Up Live in downtown Phoenix. That’s when I came up with comedic hip hop. I use my jokes to lead into my songs during my performance.

What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Be real, genuine, and humble. This game is so full of fake people selling a non-reachable dream. Create your own lane and control how people see you. Stay positive. Speak it into existence everyday.

What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Being a comedic hip hop artist because it’s so new I have to make people understand what I do. Once they see it they’re down.

We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Consistency. Put your music anywhere and everywhere that has traffic from music consumers.

Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
After I left Alabama in my childhood I lived in Detroit for the bulk of my life. Detroit is a tough place, everybody does music and all your fans are looking for fans too. I now live in Mesa, Arizona and there are more devoted fans than artists. My fa base has grown amazingly.

Where do you see yourself a year from today?
Touring across the world bringing my brand of comedic hip hop to the masses.

Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
Growing up 2Pac was my biggest inspiration and still is. He had his angry phase, but he also was an amazing person and had a heart of gold. I want to continue his fight to bring the world together.

How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
I love the music that is coming out right now. It’s very different and that’s what we need. We have to understand that music is always evolving and we can grow with it or become a part of the past and accept it.
