“Personally I think the best way to promote is to never do one kind of promotion. Use every, and I mean every, form of promotion available … Never focus on just one outlet, take advantage of all there’s to offer.”
Check out the interview with Kevin Young exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Kevin Young: It all started when I was serving my last bid. I had a lot of time to think and I decided I have a lot to tell as an individual. I decided to start telling my story and experiences in life through a pen and paper. Literally! I found a passion writing music in my cell and from that day forward I haven’t stopped. I love creating music!
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Nobody can stop you! Always peruse your dreams and turn them into reality. Stay persistent and consistent. Believe in yourself and work hard. Never give up.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Staying positive is a challenge to me. Every time I feel like giving up or quitting I remember what I’m doing it for and keep going. Another challenge is definitely time. I feel like there’s never enough time for me to complete everything. I have to follow a strict schedule to stay on track. Those have been my biggest challenges so far.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Personally I think the best way to promote is to never do one kind of promotion. Use every, and I mean every, form of promotion available to you from hiring a reputable marketing/promoting firm to social networks to street promoting. Never focus on just one outlet, take advantage of all there’s to offer.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
I come from Denver. There’s definitely a lot of good talent here in my city. I feel as if everyone who’s serious about their music is in a race to be the first one to make it happen. As far as the fans, they seem to be really criticizing and have a lot of opinions but that’s just the nature of fans I guess.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
Headlining my own tours, releasing 2-3 more projects, hiring and promoting talent nationwide, working with a couple or more successful talents, growing my entertainment label, working with a reputable marketing firm, getting on the radio and to, finding more publishing deals, and making more fans and money!
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
I’d have to say my biggest inspiration is success and family. Also a big inspiration to me has been 2Pac. I feel like his music has taught me things and inspired me to be better growing up. Someone I look up to today in the industry is Yo Gotti. I love how he built his label and brand into one of the biggest brands in rap.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
I feel like every generation changes with time. I have always been the type to embrace change and rather than complain. I enjoy and keep my mind open to different things and styles. If the music is something I can vibe to, I dig it. I’m not the one to be stuck in the past and not embrace change. I love anything that I can relate to and understand.
