“We have all failed at something at some point in our career and the way we can overcome that is by practicing and preparing and mastering our work and craft.”
Check out the interview with Gristle Beatz exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Gristle Beatz: We started as a couple of friends writing rhymes and freestyling over some beats. Once we decided to record, it turned out we had a lot to say.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
We mainly promote our music through social media and word of mouth through our fans, which has been working pretty well for us so far.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
I think the greatest challenge we face in today’s entertainment business is dealing with failure. We have all failed at something at some point in our career and the way we can overcome that is by practicing and preparing and mastering our work and craft.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The hip hop music scene in our hometown is sort of like every man for himself, but I feel like it is sort of improving. I like that we are slowly collaborating and networking with other local artists, but I really hate the fact that there are still those who don’t care to work with other artists because they think they are too good to work with other people.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
Music is going to keep changing whether we like it or not. We represent a really old school style and I think our personal flavor will last as long as people listen to hip hop.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Don’t let the negativity stop you from achieving success, fuck what other people may think. Just do what makes you happy!
What inspires you to write your next song?
Everything is a possible song inspiration for me. I’m constantly writing down lines and going over verses in my head. The real thing that gets me in the best writing state of mind is an amazing beat.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
A song for us doesn’t take all that long to produce. We go for a natural sound and the little imperfections can add to the song sometimes. We write the lyrics after we get a beat and we can record and produce it in a couple of days.
What do you think makes a great song?
Every person will have their own definition of a great song. If a person enjoys catchy hooks, raunchy lyrics, and an Arizona twist, we’d say Gristle Beatz is right up their alley.
