Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Dustin Hovermale:
I have always been a fan of good music. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Florida Georgia Line, etc. This year I decided to write music to my song lyrics and record my music so I can share with others. Music is a fun hobby that has allowed me to connect with fans from all over the world.

What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Getting your music on major radio without paying PR firms a fortune to help you. Trying to get more fans from Internet and other radio airplay.

How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
There a few local bands that play in local bars and businesses. They mostly play other people’s music. There is one person who is talented and writes her own music. Most move away to pursue music.

Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
Most musicians will have to settle for just writing their own music and performing locally. They can try to promote themselves to sell their music online. Sadly record companies rarely invest in new music talent. So your only chance is to try and write music that a famous established singer will record.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
We should all try to write our own original music and not depend on just singing other people’s music. Writing original music is a difficult and rewarding process.

What inspires you to write your next song?
All my music is based on my true life stories. People can relate to my music and struggles.

What are the steps you take to make a song?
Write a good title. Write great song lyrics. Write music for lyrics.

What do you think makes a great song?
Great song title, great lyrics, good chorus, and people have to relate to your song or message. People need to be able to remember your lyrics after playing a few times.
