“My inspiration mostly comes from my love of making music. I am inspired because I love it. I also listen to multiple genres of music including Gospel, pop, hip hop, EDM and more to draw inspiration for my next project.”

SKILLY: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
D: I started playing drums for my church when I was about 8 or 9, then I started playing bass when I was about 17. As I got a little older I wanted to do other things with music, so I started producing at age 20. I have now been producing for almost 5 years.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I promote my music through my Instagram and Facebook accounts by making videos of the projects that I am working on. I also send samples of my beats to local artists and send my SoundCloud link to potential clients.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
My greatest challenge is trying to market myself as a music producer, and finding artists that fit my style of production.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
I am from Tupelo, MS, the birthplace of Elvis Presley! Music is greatly appreciated in Tupelo, but not many people make it in the industry. I like the fact that Elvis put Tupelo on the map for great music, but I don’t like that it is so hard for musicians to make a living off of their music here. There are so many talented musicians in Tupelo, we just need to be heard!
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I think that in the future more artists will achieve success independently rather than being signed to a record label.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
My advice is to just keep working and never give up. Never think that it is impossible to achieve success in your dreams, because if other people have done it then it is definitely possible!
What inspires you to write your next song?
My inspiration mostly comes from my love of making music. I am inspired because I love it. I also listen to multiple genres of music including Gospel, pop, hip hop, EDM and more to draw inspiration for my next project.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
Without going into great detail, I first go through a bunch of sounds until I find one that fits the vibe I’m going for. Then I set the tempo and record a melody. After that, I make a drum pattern and record the bass line. Then I make an intro, a hook, and the verses. Then I add transitions. I then add other sounds until I feel each part of the beat is complete and to my satisfaction.
What do you think makes a great song?
A banging beat, good catchy hook, and meaningful lyrics.
