“Watching all the artists that have come from nothing to doing their thing has inspired us that it can be done.”

Check out the interview with Dread Head Gillie & Emmanuel Obamas exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Dread Head Gillie & Emmanuel Obamas:
Emmanuel Obamas has been writing music since the age 14. Since then he has took his passion for music to a new level. Dread Head Gillie, the younger brother of Emmanuel Obamas, also has a passion for music. After Obamas saw that he and his younger brother enjoyed making music, they started collaborating as a team and are now known as Commander & Chief.

What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Never give up on your dream. You will have to work hard for your dream, but never give up and never let no one tell you it can’t happen. Always believe in yourself no matter what anyone else has to say or how bad your circumstance might be.

What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Getting the music in the hands of the listeners.

We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Radio and social media have been good tools to get your music to fans, and doing shows even if they are for free sometimes.

Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
We are from Louisville, Kentucky. Right now Louisville is a hard state to promote music because there are little to no resources for the music industry here. So we hit the road and promoted from Atlanta, GA.

Where do you see yourself a year from today?
A year from now we hope to receive a distribution deal.

Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
Watching all the artists that have come from nothing to doing their thing has inspired us that it can be done. You can live your dream if you stay consistent.

How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
Yes and no. There is some good music being made and there is some bad music being made. I like music with meaning.
