“I truly believe my music speaks for itself, anyone who hears my music will understand I’m not just another rapper bragging about money or the mundane concepts popular with new rap.”

Check out the interview with Dipson exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
I began writing music after an 8th grade class assignment when the students were asked to write two poems and bring in two professional poems. I wrote all four poems while channeling everyday emotions and drawing inspiration from Tupac’s album Until The End Of Time. After the whole class heard the poems, the teacher and classmates encouraged me to write rap. I have been writing ever since.

What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
I truly believe my music speaks for itself, anyone who hears my music will understand I’m not just another rapper bragging about money or the mundane concepts popular with new rap. The best way to promote me is to put emphasis on my music and poetry which can be found on my social media Facebook, Instagram, etc.

What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
Ultimately I want to run a successful record label giving opportunities to those who never had it. I want to continue to express my creativity and foster others to make beautiful art that will stand the test of time.

What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
The hardest thing in the music business is getting heard, the business is so diluted with uninspiring content. Labels are throwing money at musicians who are corrupting the art rather than further it. It’s hard to watch and not believe that hip hop is dead.

What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
I find myself moving several times for various reasons. I am currently living in a suburb of Minneapolis. Minneapolis has a booming underground hip hop scene which will only continue to grow. It still has a long way to go considering it only has one hip hop radio station. I truly believe in Minneapolis and I know the best is yet to come.

What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
One advice that I think is key is to get rid of self-doubt. If making music burns deep in your soul then keep doing it. I have learned no one gets worse making music, you only get better. Shut out the doubt and have fun.

What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
The best thing that happened to me so far is finding my platform to keep creating. I was literally at a loss at one point that I did not know how to continue, especially finding my way in a new city. I eventually found my way, found a producer who had years of experience, and I only continue to learn. I found my lane and I’m staying focused.

What is your inspiration?
I find inspiration in everything. Life is my inspiration. My experiences, the world around me keeps me inspired. Life is so complicated and the idea that I can influence the world for the better keeps me going. If you have the light it is your responsibility to lead through the dark.

Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
It certainly does seem like anyone can be successful in today’s world of music especially because of the internet, but success does not necessarily translate into longevity. Only true art will stand the test of time. Success can differ from each individual, measuring success can mean a lot of things. The success I want to find is inspiring others for years to come.
