“You can make any believer out of any one in the world as long as you believe in yourself. Have faith and trust your heart.”
Check out the interview with Decevio J’mezah exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
Decevio J’mezah: It all started with a blues artist by the name of Thomas McCoy who had a son by the name Gabriel James who become a jazz artist. He then had a son very young named Decevio. He later changed his last name to J’mezah for indigent reasons. I grew up in south central LA against all odds to pursue my dream to become a music artist.
What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
I’ve done a lot of local talent shows and guerrilla marketing to gain street buzz, but to get a large amount you need commercial radio plays. I did a lot of college radio and internet radio.
What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
To get heard, to gain success, to have a voice, to gain power, to give back to community where I come from. I want to give poverty a voice and to create great memorable music that stands the test of time.
What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
The hardest thing for me is getting heard.
What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
It’s tough growing against all odds in south central. One of my true pharoahz (homeboys) saved my life by telling me to stick with the music after getting caught for armed robbery. I owe my life to music. It’s saved my life from the mean streets of Los Angeles.
What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
Stay focus, put God first, know thyself, and love thyself because you’re all you have. Get away from naysayers. You can make any believer out of any one in the world as long as you believe in yourself. Have faith and trust your heart.
What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
Everything. Music is my life. To create in the studio is the best and the crowd’s reaction is the best after a great performance.
What is your inspiration?
God and life. Music is spiritual to me and the struggle of man’s poverty strives me to win and speak the truth. Decevio is an ancient Egyptian name meaning speak truth. My name Decevious J’mezah is an ancient Hebrew name which means water and friend coming from the first black Israelites. Music gives me air, water, fire, and heart.
Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
Hell yes. With hard work and sacrifice you can achieve anything. There are artists with no talent and gain success, that goes to show you’re able to market anything.
