“Choose yourself! You must spend your time and money increasing your skills, marketing, networking, and learning how you can become a greater version of yourself!”

Check out the interview with D StretcH exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
D StretcH:
I grew up listening to hip hop in the 90’s. In high school I started to take interest in music production and started off using Sony ACID Pro to produce beats. I gave up because I was unsure of myself and it became difficult to stay on it. A few years later I’ve decided to get back into music production when I saw someone use Fruity Loops (FL Studio) for the first time. Ever since then I’ve started my beat production company and linked up with a few artists.

What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
I think having a social media presence helps a lot. Start with your friends and family then reach out to local artists and musicians who are willing to work with you. It’s also very important to have a website for yourself where you can draw people to for more personal and business reasons. You have to invest in yourself and spend time and money.

What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
I would ultimately want to become an A-List music producer with #1 singles and plenty of plaques as a testament of my work.

What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
Standing out from the rest of the pack. Unless you have a lot of money to start out with and good connections, you’re going to have to work hard and be smart to get to where you want to be.

What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
Charleston is a beautiful city with a lively music scene. The most popular music here is rock and alternative music, but there’s talented hip hop artists here making a name for themselves like Marly Mar, Baby Breeze, and myself! It’s great living down here with our weather, music, and women.

What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
Choose yourself! You must spend your time and money increasing your skills, marketing, networking, and learning how you can become a greater version of yourself! Don’t give up either! You can create a legacy for yourself and be remembered in a 100 years, but first you must start and stay the course.

What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
As of now the best thing that’s happen to me was when I sold my first beat. People sometimes don’t realized how great and empowering it is when you sold something that you created from scratch and someone sees it as valuable to them. If you can sell one, you can sell 100!

What is your inspiration?
I’m inspired by a certain group of people who are successful in their lives and are willing to teach you how to make the most of your life. A few years ago I wanted to give up because I thought I wasn’t good enough, but through their help and guidance I was able to get myself off the ground and become someone who can offer value to the world.

Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
I do, as long as you invest in yourself and ask for help when needed.
