“Creativity and originality should be an artist’s first goal when creating music.”
Check out the interview with Cold Charlie exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Cold Charlie: The Cold Charlie project started in 2014 with a new computer and Logic Pro. I didn’t have a thorough knowledge of the various audio workstations, EQs, compressors and plug-ins but had a desire to start a new musical adventure. The knowledge I have acquired will serve me well for the rest of my career, will allow me to continue learning, and will help me assist other artists who also want to push their skills to the next level.
What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I use Facebook a lot. I also used Reverbnation to promote my video. I also hired a PR company to promote my music. I write to magazines to see if it is possible to be featured and I post anywhere I can.
What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Today’s entertainment business is not like it was. We artists have a lot of available tools to make us visible. YouTube Facebook, etc. are tools that are helpful but with all these artist coming out it’s easy to get lost and never be discovered. The challenge is ongoing.
How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
The music scene in my home town is vibrant, a lot of artist trying to start something. There’s lots of great and talented musicians, but as always money is hard to find. The thing I don’t like in my hometown is that bars favors cover bands more than original material. This kills creativity and a lot of artist dont get a chance since they cant fill larger venues yet.
Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
Hard to visualize the future of music, but I think creative sounds will be the future of music. Atmosphere, mood, and creative writing. Creativity and originality should be an artist’s first goal when creating music. Being influence by someone doesn’t mean that you have to sound like them.
What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
Be yourself. Don’t try to copy. Sound like yourself. There is one Snoop Dogg, one Tupac, and one Ice Cube. That’s why people still listen to them. Be you.
What inspires you to write your next song?
I think every song is about love. Love inspires me.
What are the steps you take to make a song?
I have to be inspired by something. Anything can inspire me: a drum beat, a sound, a subject, a mood, a movie, a dream, etc. Sources of inspiration are everywhere, you just have to tap into it. Once I find my source of inspiration everything else falls into place.
What do you think makes a great song?
A great melody with the right beat surrounded by thoughtful lyrics wrapped up in a great sound production.
