“Be prepared to invest and believe that you’re worth investing in. You gotta believe in yourself and not be afraid to take risks.”
Check out the interview with Birdy exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Birdy: I would say it all started when I was younger, like in 6th or 7th grade I started writing music. My parents showed me a lot of great music from hip hop, oldies, r&b, and disco that inspired me. As I got older I got into an internship working at a local studio where I learned to record and mix music. I got back into songwriting and starting performing at local shows and got an opportunity to perform in Las Vegas and from there to California.
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
First I would have to say you need to be passionate and not afraid to be yourself. Secondly, is if this is really what you want to do with your life and if it’s a definite, go for it with everything you got. And last I would say to be prepared to invest and believe that you’re worth investing in. You gotta believe in yourself and not be afraid to take risks.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Some of the hardest tasks and challenges I would say is to be ready to be told no a lot. Another is taking negative criticism and learning from it. There was a time when first learning to mix music, I received a lot of negative criticism and turned it to constructive criticism to make my music quality sound great.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Honestly, the best way I have found to promote and advertise my music is online. The internet has made it possible to promote and advertise to the whole world. Also performances and networking with knowledgeable people in the entertainment business.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
My city is Salt Lake City, Utah and the hip hop scene is growing big out here. There is a lot of history and stories that need to be told. When it comes to the fans they are great and there are a lot of talented artists.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
I see myself living comfortable making music and getting my foot in the major music industry and nationally known.
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
My biggest inspiration was my parents showing me some the great hip hop music of the 80’s and 90’s from the west coast, east coast, and south. In today’s world my biggest inspirations are hip hop artists Curren$y, The Game, Nipsey Hustle, Drake, J. Cole, and Wiz Khalifia.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
I think today’s music, just like all music, there is some great music and bad music. I like a lot of new music and discover new artists to become a fan of all the time. And there also is new music that I don’t.
