“The best advice I can give another artist would be to make sure you have the right mind set and expectation to do this. It’s not as simple as making a song, sharing the link, and you’re famous.”
Check out the interview with Benjii exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
Benjii: Music has been a pillar for me for as long as I can remember. Growing up it was either keeping me out of trouble or getting me into it. As far as my history in the music scene, I’m just getting started. There’s a lot I look to accomplish before I can really answer this.
What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
The best way to promote yourself as an artist is through your personality. Let your fans know who you are. Social media is also a good tool when you use it right; it can’t be just spamming links. YouTube, Soundcloud, magazines, blogs, and just hitting the streets and handing out CDs gives people something to embrace.
What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
I want to become a legend. When you speak about me I want to be known as a great rapper and artist.
What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
The hardest thing about the music scene is probably building relationships and connecting with the right people because no one tells you that’s what you need to do. Most of the time those people don’t need you so they have no reason to want to work with you. It’s an uphill battle.
What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
I’m from DC so it really depends on which part of the city you’re in. It’s fast paced and every man for himself out here. Our music scene isn’t huge, but it’s constantly growing. Unless you connect with the right people it can be kind of difficult to get your music heard.
What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
The best advice I can give another artist would be to make sure you have the right mind set and expectation to do this. It’s not as simple as making a song, sharing the link, and you’re famous. There’s so much behind the scenes work that has to get done and a lot of the time it falls on the artist to make sure everything is taken care of.
What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
It hasn’t happened yet.
What is your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from my experiences and just life in general. If something happens in the world that affects me or makes me feel some type of way it always makes its way into the music. I want to be best rapper and that pushes me to just keep improving my craft.
Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
Yeah I do. I feel like anyone with the drive to keep going can be successful in music, but it definitely doesn’t happen overnight. There’s a lot of work to do to attend to in order to maintain success.
