“Be you. You will always win at being yourself because nobody else is you.”
Check out the interview with 1sPlace Poe’t exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.
Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
1sPlace Poe’t: I always have been poetic, versatile, and different. My style is unorthodox, so it’s also entertaining. From elementary school up to now I’d seize any opportunity to share my positive energy with other folks who needed to feel good. I just stay ready to perform a poem, song, story, speech, or even a dope conversation with someone because you never know when that good vibe might be the motivating factor for that someone to keep pushing.
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Be you. You will always win at being yourself because nobody else is you.
What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
As an independent artist sifting through the legit resources versus the fallacies is a challenge; however, I’m glad to have a team of folks that have my back and best interest at heart and mind. Learning that independent doesn’t mean you have to go at it alone was also key for me.
We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
I don’t think anything worth doing is easy. If a person isn’t using social media and digital marketing platforms offered by the countless promotion businesses out there that person is sleep. They are slipping and missing great opportunities to promote their brand. I’m not saying it’s the end all be all, it’s definitely a wise tool to have.
Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
I represent Orlando, FL and its surrounding counties. O-town is ripe with diverse and unique talent, and folks that create, enjoy, and love dope types of art. I feel like central Florida has a rare breed of hidden treasures that the world should hear. Collaboration is paramount so the impact from our city and surrounding areas will be felt across the globe.
Where do you see yourself a year from today?
I envision myself rocking the crowds, bettering my community and the lives within, and collecting awards for being 1sPlace Poe’t, the Inebriated Writer. I also see myself taking breaks on islands somewhere off the coast surrounded by the most beautiful and aromatic herbs to ever grow from God’s green Earth.
Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
The Almighty Being that effortlessly created an unparalleled dope individual such as myself along with my Ma and Pops would take the top spots in my book. Artistically I’m inspired by Andre 3000, Al Green, Ms. Badu, and countless others. Perhaps my greatest inspiration and the most talented of all is my younger sister Denèe Benton.
How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
There’s lots of music being released and heard today. Some I vibe to, some I don’t. Everybody will have a different preference in genre because we all have different energetic frequencies, but there are just some songs that I feel have no genre restrictions because they make you feel something real. That type of music has no boundaries, it’s freedom.
